North American driving enthusiasts who have long awaited the European version of Ford’s high performance Focus ST model will soon have their wishes granted. The Ford RS an SVT team have released a fleet of 60 prototype Focus ST models to undergo vigorous testing to ensure the vehicle is ready for launch in North America come 2012. Ford has not however forgotten about it’s commitment to fuel efficiency with the new Focus ST.
“The new Focus ST is eagerly awaited around the world, which is appropriate as this is our first global performance model,” said Jost Capito, Ford’s director of Global Performance Vehicles. “It must live up to Ford’s reputation for producing affordable yet exciting and sporty versions of its smaller cars that reward and delight enthusiast drivers, but can also be used every day.
Ford will be using a high performance version of its Ecoboost engine in the new Focus ST. The Ecoboost engine, already found in several models of the F-150, will produce 246 hp, all while providing fuel economy that will help reduce the amount of time (and money) consumers spend filling up.
“Fuel efficiency is a key leadership target for Ford Motor Company globally. We want to be class-leading even with a performance vehicle, so we’re working on getting the best possible blend of high performance and fuel economy from the new ST,” said Matthias Tonn, chief program engineer, Global Performance Products, Ford of Europe.
Keep an eye out for the new Focus ST to hit your local Ford Dealer in late 2011 or early 2012.
