Noise Snare Technology Quiets Noisy Vehicles

Noise Snare Tells if Your Vehicle is Too Loud

Car enthusiasts love hearing the faint sound of a fast, expensive sports car fast approaching, only to be passed up by a metallic blur. We love to hear the melodic sounds of the engine revving at a red light, then showing off a little by speeding away when the light turns green. The noise these cars emit are something of beauty and now, may soon be illegal.

The Calgary police department will be ready to start issuing tickets out to motorists whose vehicles might be a little too loud. So, how does one define “loud” exactly? With a device called the Noise Snare. The system is designed to track vehicles with a camera and at the same time, measure the noise it gives off in decibels. Violations will cost motorists around $200 and they are expecting to start issuing them by next summer. The Calgary police departments have done testing with the device to make sure it is accurate, even going as far as getting a reputable local acoustic engineer to have a look at it. Rather than just go out full force with the Noise Snare, the Calgary Police department is offering free clinics for motorists to bring their car and have the noise level tested before receiving a ticket for it.

So if you’re looking to get that next Harley and installing a new Black Cat exhaust system, or finally getting the sports car of your dreams, just be aware that you might be paying a little more than you planned on. As of right now, the system has only been introduced in the Calgary area and whether or not there will be a widespread adoption is unknown. But what we do know is that the technology exists. Does this mean the end of high powered muscle cars and motorcycles as we know it? Sound off in the comments and let us know what you think.

Watch the video below to see the Noise Snare in action. Enjoy.

Fabulous techonology.  About time someone put teeth into current laws.   Nobody has a right to create a nuisance to others.   I hope this is adopted worldwide.   Combined with new electric/hybrid technologies we may all be able to enjoy a quieter and more civil world.

I somewhat agree with you are saying. The motor enthusiast in me absolutely hates this technology. To me there isn’t anything quite like the sound of a roaring V8, but at the same time, I do believe some people take it a bit too far with how loud their vehicles are. From the factory, I don’t think there are any cars that might be “too loud”, and some cars with upgraded exhaust systems are fine as well, but then you get those people who like I said take it too far. Police already give out noise violations for cars that are too loud. I don’t see widespread adoption with this technology anytime soon, but I guess we’ll see. Thanks for the comment.
