Each year Popular Mechanics magazine selects the top 10 technology products that matter most. This year the Ford Motor Company received the Breakthrough Award for their new innovative 1.0- liter three cylinder EcoBoost engine.
The new EcoBoost engine is the first of its kind for Ford and is one of the smallest displacement engines they have ever built. Though small the 1.0-liter engine, which is already on sale in Europe, does pack a pretty good punch at 125 horsepower and is loaded with technical innovations. It delivers impressive acceleration and is one of the smoothest and quietest engines in the Ford lineup globally.
“We placed the bar incredibly high when we set out to design this engine,” said Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president, Global Powertrain. “We wanted to deliver eye-popping fuel economy, surprising performance, quietness and refinement – and all from a very small three-cylinder engine.
“The team responded to this seemingly impossible challenge with some really exciting innovation,” added Bakaj. “We are thrilled Popular Mechanics has recognized the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine for a Breakthrough Award.”
The Breakthrough Award winning engine is expected to be offered globally, including North America. If you are not familiar with the EcoBoost engine it pairs turbo-charging, direct injection and variable valve timing to enable a smaller, downsized engine to deliver the performance of a larger engine with about a 20% gain in fuel economy.
