F-150 Sales Increase As EcoBoost Grows in Popularity

EcoBoost Engine Picture

Ford made a huge gamble in 2010 when they first added the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 EcoBoost engine to its F-150 models. Fast forward 2 years later and that gamble has now become one of the most popular engines with over 200,000 sold. “It’s a very popular engine,” Ford spokesman Mike Levine said, adding that EcoBoost engines went into 43 percent of F-150’s sold so far this year. “EcoBoost take-rates have exceeded our expectations.”

When the EcoBoost engine made its debut in late 2010 and early 2011, Ford for the first time began selling more V-6 trucks than V-8’s. “There was this theory that the V-8 was necessary, that it was a key ingredient that truck buyers wanted,” Tom Libby, an auto analyst with consulting company R.L. Polk in Detroit, said. “Ford proved that theory wrong with EcoBoost.”

What Is EcoBoost?

If you’re not familiar with the EcoBoost engine, it combines gasoline direct injection with turbo power to provide up to 20% better fuel efficiency without sacrificing the power and performance drivers want. It’s a technology that began with the F-150’s and has since spread across many of the Ford models. The incredible success of the engine has caused many of the F-150’s competitors to produce similar technologies. The 2013 Ram 1500 is debuting with an available eight-speed automatic transmission and 3.6-liter V-6 while the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado is expected to have updated powertrains to challenge Ford’s V-6’s and V-8’s.

Ford F-150 EcoBoost Pricing

The price of the popular engine was actually increased by Ford for the 2013 model year by $350, bringing the total price of the engine to nearly $2,100 more than the base 3.7-liter V-6. In order to better manage the supply-and-demand equilibrium, the automaker made the decision to increase the price. Many experts believe the increase in price will have little to no effect on the demand as the engine is still very well priced.
