At the 2012 LA Auto Show Ford came away with a huge win with its newly redesigned 2013 Ford Fusion being named the Green Car of the Year. According to USA Today, “The very popular midsized sedan was named on the basis of the fuel efficiency of its long list of powertrain options, including a hybrid and plug-in hybrid electrified models, as well as its gas-saving turbocharged 1.6 and 2.0 liter small.”
“But sales popularity also was one of the factors that pushed it to the win”, said Ron Cogan, publisher of the Green Car Journal which created the annual award that is presented at the L.A. show. “That’s because it will have more impact on energy and oil use than a ‘greener,’ but niche vehicle.”
“It will make a big impact,” he said at the awards ceremony.
Since its inception eight years ago the Green Car of the Year Award has been presented to a whole range of vehicles. While hybrids have won several of the titles over the years, some diesels such as the Audi A3 TDI have surprisingly been awarded with the title as well. And this year brought even more variety to the mix with two of the 5 finalist being gas only models. The annual award is decided by a panel of judges made up of prominent environmentalists as well as celebrities, including long time automobile enthusiast Jay Leno.
Not all cars can be eligible for the award given each year at the LA Auto Show, any car entered must meet at least one of two requirements; either it’s a brand new model or a substantially redesigned existing model. The sleek new Fusion was awarded the title from a group of five finalists including the Ford C-Max, Toyota Prius C, Dodge Dart Aero and the Mazda CX-5.
