Samsung Galaxy S4 And Your Vehicle: What You Need To Know

The Samsung Galaxy S4 has been available for a while now. It is built upon the very popular previous-gen Samsung Galaxy S3, and there’s a lot of new things you’ll be able to do to maximize its potential.

The Basics

With a nearly edge-to-edge 5″ HD AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) screen with 441ppi, you’ll be able to enjoy your S4 at full 1080p. One of the big features that people are excited about is the S4’s camera.

Everyone Wants to Be a Photographer

The S4 is equipped with a 13MP rear-facing camera and a 2MP front-facing camera. What’s more exciting is what the S4 can do with those specs: Dual cameras allow both rear- and front-facing cameras to be operating on the screen at the same time; you are also able to record sound to the pictures you take. This will put more of a personality to the pictures and help you relive those special moments. One of my favorite camera features is the Eraser. Photobombers will grow to hate this features because it allows you to erase unwanted images out of a picture. That means you can hang that great picture of you and your significant other without the creepy guy in the background.

The S4 has many other features to offer, but since we’re not Engadget or Gizmodo, we’ll ignore those and  focus on the features that can be utilized in your vehicle. These features are designed to increase driver safety while operating your phone.

1. Touch with Gloves Capability

If you live in a state or country where winter is actually considered a season (I’m looking at you Florida and California. Get winter, you’ll like it), then you probably have a pair of winter gloves lying around the house. Winter gloves are a fantastic invention. They keep your hands warm and dry so you can throw snowballs at your obnoxious siblings to your heart’s content. However, I feel the glove industry hasn’t adapted well to the smartphone market.

Before you bring up smart touch gloves, let me point out some flaws. First, they tell you what fingers you can use to operate your phone’s screen. What if I want to scroll with my pinky? Who are you, Mr. Glove, to tell me I can’t? Secondly, I really enjoy the gloves I already have. I don’t want to go out and purchase a whole new pair. I mean, who has the need for two sets of winter gloves? Samsung has a solution to this problem with the S4: they made the screen operable for those of us wearing gloves. It’s that simple, folks. They just made it possible for the screen to register input through a glove without having to buy a new pair.

So let’s say the inside of your vehicle feels like a meat locker and you’re getting a call, checking your navigation, or just trying to turn on your phone. Instead of trying to bite your glove off while simultaneously driving and holding your phone (not a scenario I recommend, for obvious reasons), you can just swipe your finger across the screen with ease. This will allow you to maintain safe operation of your vehicle and still be able to change the song before anyone realizes Miley Cyrus’ Wrecking Ball is in your playlist.

S Voice Drive

This is by far the best feature you could ever ask for. The S4’s S Voice Drive gives you full control over key features specifically through voice commands. Texting and driving has long proven to be dangerous, so the hands-free aspect of S Voice Drive is actually one of the better safety features of the interface. You can access important unread messages through your voice. You can even formulate a response by just speaking it, just like you would if the other person was sitting right next to you. With S Voice Drive, you can also enter in a destination strictly with your voice. This allows eyes, hands and attention to be on the road to ensure driver safety. S Voice Drive also drops unnecessary information from the phone’s screen and enlarges text to make it a simpler interface.

If you have a Galaxy S4, I hope you’re enjoying it and making sure to use the features it offers to keep you safe while driving. Make sure to check out our DIY car dock article so you can keep that phone within in your line of sight when using it for things like navigation.
